How to Make Perfect Christmas Hot Chocolate Bombs
Hot chocolate bombs are the ultimate cozy treat, and the best part? They’re easier to make than you think! These hollow chocolate spheres filled with cocoa mix and marshmallows transform an ordinary cup of milk into a rich, creamy hot cocoa experience.
In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the simple steps to create stunning hot chocolate bombs that look professional but are totally beginner-friendly.
Here’s everything you need:
A brush (optional, can be replace by a small spoon)
Christmas Sprinkles (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions for Making Hot Chocolate Bombs
Melt the Chocolate
Start by melting your chocolate. You can use either the microwave method or a double boiler; both work well, but here’s how to do each:Microwave Method: Chop your chocolate into small, even pieces and place them in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat it in 15-20 second intervals, stirring well between each round until fully melted. Be careful not to overheat, as this can cause the chocolate to seize.
Double Boiler Method: Place a heat-safe bowl over a pot of simmering water (make sure the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the bowl). Stir the chocolate constantly until it melts smoothly.
Candy Melts vs. Real Chocolate: If you’re using candy melts, there’s no need to temper them, making the process simpler. However, real chocolate requires tempering to achieve that shiny finish and snap. Check out my video tutorial on tempering chocolate for an easy guide if you're using real chocolate.
Coat the Mold
Pour a spoonful of melted chocolate into each cavity of your mold. You’ll need two half-spheres for every chocolate bomb. Use a brush to evenly coat the sides of the mold. If you don’t have a brush, a spoon works just as well, just swirl the chocolate around to ensure full coverage.Set the Chocolate (Layer 1)
Place the mold in the freezer for just a few minutes, don’t leave it in too long, as over-freezing can cause condensation.Apply a Second Layer
After the first layer has set, apply a second layer of chocolate to reinforce the shell and prevent it from breaking. Check for any thin spots by holding the mold up to the light. Return the mold to the freezer until fully set (it also takes just a few minutes).Remove the Spheres from the Mold
Gently loosen the chocolate from the mold by starting at the corners. Once the edges are free, press the bottom of each sphere to carefully pop it out.Smooth the Edges
Heat a plate or pan slightly and gently press the edge of one half-sphere onto the surface to even it out. This step ensures a clean, even edge for sealing. Leave the other half-sphere for later.Fill the Spheres
Take the half-sphere you just smoothed and add about 2 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix and a handful of mini marshmallows. Feel free to customize the filling with extras like crushed candy canes or sprinkles.Seal the Chocolate Bomb
Heat the edge of the second half-sphere on the plate or pan, then gently press it onto the filled half to form a complete sphere. Use your fingers to wipe away any excess chocolate for a clean finish.Decorate and Enjoy
Let the chocolate bomb set, then decorate as desired! Drizzle with melted chocolate, sprinkle with festive decorations, or even add edible glitter for a magical touch.Serve
When ready to enjoy, place the hot chocolate bomb in a mug and pour hot milk over it. Watch the magic happen as the chocolate melts, revealing the cocoa mix and marshmallows inside!
