Have you ever been super excited about a cake you've just baked, only to struggle to get it out of the pan? Or, you manage to get it out of the pan but it falls apart… Well, I've got a little secret that's going to change the game for you. It’s called “cake goop” or simply, a homemade cake release. This easy to make mixture only requires 3 ingredients, takes 5 minutes to make, and will make sure your cakes pop out of the pan perfectly every time.

Understanding the Ingredients:

  • Vegetable Shortening: Vegetable shortening (most of you know it as Crisco) is a type of fat made from oils that's solid at room temperature. It’s great for baking because it helps cakes come out of the pan easily without sticking. It coats the pan smoothly and doesn’t add any flavor.

  • All-Purpose Flour: This common flour is used in lots of baking recipes. In the cake release mix, it helps the shortening stick to the pan better so your cake doesn’t stick. It makes sure the mixture spreads evenly over every part of the pan.

  • Vegetable Oil (Canola, Sunflower Oil,…): These oils stay liquid at room temperature. Adding oil to the mix makes it easier to brush onto the pan and helps cover the entire surface without clumping, especially in pans with detailed designs.

The combination of these 3 ingredients will make sure your cakes will not stick to any pan and will not have a residue!

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Can I substitute the vegetable oil with another type of oil? Yes, you can use any neutral-flavored oil like canola or sunflower oil. These alternatives work just as well and won't impart any unwanted flavors to your cakes.

  • How long can I store this cake release mix? You can store the cake release mix in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three months or 6 months in the fridge (I prefer the fridge). Make sure to stir it if it's been sitting unused for a while to ensure the ingredients are well combined before use.

  • Is this recipe safe for all types of cake pans? Absolutely! This cake release works great with all kinds of baking pans including metal, silicone, and glass. Just make sure to apply a thin, even layer to get the best results (using a pastry brush is the easiest way).

  • Why do my cakes stick even after using a commercial non-stick spray? Commercial sprays often contain lecithin, which can build up over time and become sticky. Homemade cake release is free of additives, providing a more reliable non-stick surface without buildup.
