If you love or are looking for baked chicken recipes, this easy BBQ-style chicken is a must-try! I use baked chicken breast, but you can swap it for baked chicken thighs if you prefer juicier meat. The marinade is flexible, you can use your favorite seasonings; the goal here is to show you the simple trick to get the perfect BBQ-style chicken using your oven.
In this recipe, I used shawarma spices because I created a healthy shawarma bowl, but any BBQ-style seasoning will work.
This oven-baked chicken is flavorful, tender, and perfect for meal prep or a quick dinner! (and of course, it is super easy to make!).

Ingredients to make BBQ-style baked chicken breasts:

Measurements are posted in the recipe card below the instructions.
Instructions to make this roasted chicken breast recipe in the oven:
- Slice the chicken breasts in half.
- Make the sauce by mixing olive oil, lemon juice, garlic cloves, shawarma spices, and salt together.

- Put the chicken in the sauce and stir everything together. Let it marinate for 30 minutes to soak up the flavors.

- Place the chicken on a baking rack, this is key for achieving that BBQ-style texture in the oven. The baking rack allows hot air to circulate around the chicken, cooking it evenly on all sides. This mimics the effect of a grill, giving the chicken that crispy, charred texture like it’s been cooked on a BBQ. If you don’t have one, this one on Amazon is a great option!
- Broil the chicken at 500°F (about 260°C) for 30 minutes.

You can use this oven method for other chicken parts like wings or thighs, too. The baking rack is the trick here; it lets heat spread all around the chicken, making it crispy like it’s been grilled. Try it with any marinade you like. Some favorites are BBQ sauce, teriyaki sauce, honey mustard, or just herbs, spices, and olive oil.

I made a tasty chicken shawarma bowl to go with it. I put the chicken on top of soft basmati rice, added some shredded lettuce mixed with olive oil, lemon, and a bit of salt, my Mediterranean sumac salad, and finished it with a drizzle of my homemade Tahini sauce.
