There’s something sweet about serving appetizers that make people smile right away. I made these to represent the magic of Christmas, but they work even better as a New Year’s Eve appetizer or even for the 4th of July! They come together in no time and need only a few ingredients. They also turned out to be one of the cutest appetizers I made this year. If you’re planning your Christmas table, here’s what I shared so far:

Ingredients to make these Christmas appetizers 🪄:
- Puff pastry sheet: A rectangular sheet works best and usually gives you around 11 magic wands.
- Marinara sauce: Your favourite pizza sauce works here. You can use a homemade recipe like this one or pick a store version.
- Shredded cheese: Mozza melts beautifully and brings that classic pizza pull. Any cheese you enjoy will work, so you can make the flavour your own.
- Egg or milk: Brushing the pastry with a little egg wash or milk helps the stars turn golden and glossy in the oven.
- Basil or Oregano: I sprinkled a bit of basil on top, Oregano works too!
Measurements are posted in the recipe card below the instructions.
How to make puff pastry magic wands:
1. Start by cutting the stars out of your puff pastry. If you’re working with one sheet, cut five stars and keep the rest for the sticks. Gather the scraps and cut a few more stars. If you’re using two sheets, use one for all the stars and the other for the sticks.

2. Take the part you saved for the sticks and spread a light layer of pizza sauce on half of it. Add the shredded cheese on top, then fold the sheet over. Cut the folded piece into equal strips to make the sticks.

3. Twist each strip gently and set it on a baking tray lined with parchment. Place a star on top of each stick. Brush everything with a bit of egg wash or milk, add a little shredded cheese on the stars, and finish with a pinch of basil. Bake following your puff pastry’s instructions. Mine baked at 220 °C (425 °F) for about 10 to 15 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What fillings can I use for the pizza magic wands?
The recipe is easy to customize. You can keep the classic marinara and mozzarella or try pesto, pepperoni bits, cooked mushrooms, or any filling you enjoy in a pizza appetizer. You can also do sweet flavours, like nutella, or any spread you like!
Can I make these Christmas appetizers ahead of time?
You can assemble the wands a few hours ahead and keep them in the fridge covered. Add the egg wash or milk right before baking and bake them right before serving so they stay golden and crunchy.
How do I store leftover Pizza Magic Wands?
Let them cool, then keep them in an airtight container in the fridge. They stay good for about two days and warm up nicely in the oven for a few minutes.
Can I reheat these Christmas appetizers?
Yes. A quick reheat in the oven at 350 °F brings the puff pastry back to life and keeps it crisp. The air fryer also works well.
