I always seem to have more ease getting creative with Halloween recipes than with fall recipes. This year I already published 4 new Halloween recipes, and not a single new one for fall. Here’s what I shared:
- Nutella Puff Pastry Evil Tree
- Halloween Prosciutto & Mozzarella Skewers
- Spinach Pizza Dough (Perfect green pizza for Halloween)
- Skeleton Head Mushrooms
Mind you, I still have more Halloween recipes ready but not even published yet. So I was like, I really need to give fall a chance. After all, it’s my favorite season and I was born in fall. Before I dive into soup season (it’s still been hot here but I’m looking forward to making soup next week), I thought I’d start with appetizers. And Boursin, my favorite cheese since I was a child, felt like the perfect place to begin.
This Fall appetizer is easy to make and requires 2 ingredients, Boursin (or a similar cheese in texture), and nachos (cheese nachos for the orange color).

Tools & Ingredients to make Pumpkin shaped cheese ball:
- String: I used food-grade cooking string, known as cotton butcher twine, which is used to tie around the cheese to create the pumpkin ridges.
- Plastic wrap (cling film): Needed to wrap the cheese so you can tie it without sticking.
- Boursin: This is the base. You can also use other soft cheeses with a similar texture.
- Cheese Nachos: Crush them and roll the cheese ball in the crumbs to get that bright orange pumpkin color. You can go with other types of chips if you prefer like Cheetos or anything you like that is orange.
Measurements are posted in the recipe card below the instructions.
Instructions to make Pumpkin cheese ball:
1. Place the Boursin on a sheet of cling film and wrap it loosely. Use your hands to gently press and round it into a ball.
Wrap string around the cling-film-covered cheese to create pumpkin ridges. Pull just enough to leave an impression but not so tight that the cheese squeezes out.

2. Let the ball sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes so it firms up and it is easier to work with. You can also place it in the freezer for a few minutes, just don’t let it freeze or the texture will change when thawed.
Cut the strings and carefully remove the wrap.

3. Roll the cheese ball in finely crushed chips until fully coated. Place the pumpkin cheese ball on a serving plate, carefully stick the cinnamon stick in the middle, add crackers or bread around it, and serve.

Frequently Asked Questions:
- Can I use another cheese instead of Boursin? Yes, any soft spreadable cheese with a similar texture works.
- How far in advance can I make this? You can shape the cheese ball up to a day ahead. Keep it wrapped in cling film in the fridge, then coat it in nachos just before serving so it stays crunchy.
- What can I use instead of nachos? Crushed cheese puffs, any chips that are orange in color or even crackers.
