What are chocolate crinkle cookies?
Chocolate crinkle cookies are soft, fudgy cookies that look a bit like brownies on the inside and are coated in powdered sugar before baking. As they bake, the dough spreads and cracks, creating that signature “crinkled” look.

Ingredients for Chocolate crinkle cookies
- Cocoa Powder: The star ingredient! Cocoa powder adds a rich chocolate flavor and creates that deep, dark color. Invest in good quality cocoa powder, trust me you will taste the difference. Also, go for an unsweetened cocoa powder.
- Baking Powder: This helps the cookies rise, creating those signature cracks on the surface as they bake.
- Flour: use all purpose flour for this recipe, it helps the cookies have a soft texture without falling apart.
- Butter: Adds richness and helps create the soft, tender texture of the cookies. As always, use unsalted butter to have control over how much salt is added in a recipe.
- Vanilla: Yes, these are chocolate cookies, but vanilla adds warmth and enhances the chocolate flavor. You can use something as simple as vanilla extract or go for vanilla bean which is richer in flavour.
- Sugar: Use white granulated sugar, I wouldn’t recommend brown sugar as it adds extra moisture to the cookies and these cookies already have a brownie like texture.
- Eggs: I use large eggs, you can use medium eggs just add a tiny bit more flour if you feel the texture of the dough is a bit wet. Use cold or room temperature eggs, whatever you have on hand.
- Powdered Sugar: To dip cookies in before baking, this is what gives the cookies their cracked look.

Tips to Make the Best Chocolate Crinkle Cookies:
- Sift Dry Ingredients
- Sifting the flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder removes lumps and helps combine the dry ingredients evenly, resulting in a smoother dough.
- Don’t Skip the Chill Time
- Chilling the dough is crucial! It prevents the cookies from spreading too much during baking and helps create those beautiful crinkles.
- Roll Generously in Powdered Sugar
