What is traditional hummus made of?
Traditional hummus is made from chickpeas, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, and salt. It’s a creamy Middle Eastern dip that’s naturally vegan and full of flavor.
Is hummus healthy?
Yes, hummus is considered healthy. It’s high in plant-based protein, fiber, and healthy fats from tahini. It’s also a great option for gluten-free and dairy-free diets.
Instructions to make easy hummus recipe:
- Start by draining and rinsing your can of chickpeas really well.
- Add the chickpeas to your blender along with a large garlic clove and the tsp of salt. Blend for a few seconds just to get things started, then pause and scrape down the sides of your blender so everything mixes evenly.
- Next, pour in the lemon juice, tahini, and the water. Blend again until the mixture starts coming together.
- Now, drop in 2 to 3 ice cubes (depending on the size of your ice cubes), this trick helps make your hummus extra creamy. Keep blending until it’s super smooth.
- Give it a quick taste and adjust the salt or lemon juice if you feel it needs a little more flavor.

- When it’s ready, transfer your hummus to an airtight container and store it in the fridge.
- To serve, spoon it into a plate or bowl, drizzle with olive oil, and add your favorite toppings. I like to keep it simple with a few fresh mint leaves on top.

Frequently Asked Questions:
- Can I use dried chickpeas instead of canned? Yes! Just soak them overnight with a tsp of baking soda, then cook until soft. You’ll need about 1.5 cups of cooked chickpeas to replace one 540ml can. Make sure you cook them until they are really soft to give you that smoothness.
- Do I need to peel the chickpeas? Peeling gives you smoother hummus, but it’s optional. If you’re short on time, blending well should still give you a creamy result.
- Why the ice cubes? Adding ice cubes to homemade hummus helps make it creamier and lighter. The cold temperature helps emulsify the tahini and chickpeas, creating a smoother texture. It also prevents the tahini from becoming too thick or grainy.
- How long does homemade hummus last?
Keep it in an airtight container in the fridge. It usually stays fresh for up to 5 days. - What toppings go well with hummus?
Olive oil, paprika, toasted pine nuts, mint… Serve with pita bread, crackers, or fresh veggies.
